Advancing Cancer Research at Palacký University’s CATRIN & IMTM

This week, we are honored to welcome Professor Maria Grazia Rimoli and Dr. Federica Sodano from the University of Naples Federico II, Italy, to the Institute of Molecular and Translational Medicine (IMTM) and Czech Advanced Technology and Research Institute (CATRIN) at Palacký University, Olomouc.

As part of their visit, Prof. Rimoli and Dr. Sodano will lead a seminar series focused on the role of arginase in immuno-cancer therapy, an area of research supported by AIRC (Fondazione AIRC per la Ricerca sul Cancro) and co-funded by the ERA Chair ACCELERATOR and the ERC Advanced Grant AMADEUS.

Exploring Arginase Inhibition in Cancer Therapy

Their research focuses on the therapeutic potential of targeting arginase 2, a critical enzyme in the tumor microenvironment. Arginase depletes arginine, a key nutrient required for T-cell activation and function, effectively suppressing the immune system’s ability to fight cancer. By inhibiting arginase, their work aims to:

  • Restore arginine levels, supporting immune cell function
  • Reactivate T-cell-mediated anti-tumor immunity, enhancing the body’s natural defense mechanisms
  • Improve the efficacy of gastric cancer immunotherapy, paving the way for more effective treatments

Bridging Science & Clinical Applications

Beyond its biological significance, this research plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between fundamental science and clinical applications, contributing to the development of personalized cancer medicine. During their visit, Prof. Rimoli and Dr. Sodano will engage with our research teams, exchange expertise, and foster new collaborations in advancing these innovative therapeutic strategies.

We look forward to the discussions and collaborations that will shape the future of immuno-oncology.

Stay tuned for more updates on groundbreaking cancer research.
